Custom Permanent Magnets for Motor Applications – Segment Magnets

Permanent magnets can create their own persistent magnetic field after magnetized by an external magnetic field. And their magnetic field can convert mechanical energy to electrical energy or convert electrical energy to mechanical energy.

Electric motors are electrical machines that use electrical energy to produce mechanical energy. Therefore permanent magnets are a critical element to virtually any modern step motor such as hybrid motor and permanent magnet motor.

When permanent magnets are used to create magnetic field in a DC motor, the motor is referred as permanent magnet DC motor or PMDC motor.

Rare Earth magnets are typically stronger than permanent ceramic magnets. In electric motors, that results in higher performance from smaller, lighter motors. However, neodymium and samarium-cobalt rare earth magnets are also more expensive than ferrite magnet.

Magnetic Materials for Motor

  • Sintered NdFeB magnet is the most important magnet material for PM motor. It has highest magnetic properties with maximum working temperature 60-220℃. It can improve motor performance and reduce the volume as well. When there is limitation on low cost or super high operating temperature and/or corrosion resistance, we can use ferrite or smco magnets.
  • Bonded NdFeB magnet is well known for good plasticity. Hence it suits for complex shape magnet or for a magnet with multipole magnetization direction. Usually, the production of bonded magnet need the help of mould.
  • SmCo magnet can work under high working temperature 300-350℃ and offer outstanding corrosion resistance. The magnetic force is weaker than Sintered NdFeB magnet, but also very powerful.
  • Ferrite magnet is the traditional magnet material that used in DC electric motors. It offers low energy compared to rare earth magnets, but provides strong resistance to demagnetization, exceptional corrosion resistance and low price.
