Project Description
What Does N42 Mean for a Magnet?
Magnet n42 is a neodymium magnet strength rating. The number in the magnet grade refers to the strongest point of the material’s B-H curve, or its maximum energy product. From N35, N38, N40, N42, N45, N50 to N52, as the number increases, the performance of the magnet increases and the magnet price becomes more expensive as well.
When It Comes to The Question Of “What Grade Should I Choose”, N42 Magnet Is a Good Choice.
N42 is perfect for green hands. When you start a new project which need neodymium magnet, you have to work through a variety of magnets to find a balance between size and pull strength. It is difficult to find the right magnet grade immediately among many properties. But grade N42 is a good start to have sample test easily.
Because, at present, the most sold magnets in online shops are also N42. You can always find various sizes of n42 block, disc, ring or countersunk magnet sample online. As a special reminder, special shaped magnets, such as arc shape, need to be custom produced by magnet manufacturers.
You can get the same strength as an N50 magnet by using a slightly larger N42 magnet or get the same strength as an N38 magnet by using a slightly small N42 magnet. But if you need the highest strength in the smallest possible size at room temperature, grade N52 or N55 is the strongest available.
Do You Know Why So Many Magnet Distributors Choose N42 Neodymium Magnet?
From low to high, N42 is in the middle, so it is a great balance among cost, strength and performance. In short, N42 is the best cost-effective.
Although there are also higher grades, such as N52 and N55, their maximum operating temperature is only 60 degrees Celsius, and N42 is 80 degrees Celsius.
With slightly higher temperatures, in the range of 140°F – 176°F (60°C – 80°C), N42 magnets may actually be stronger than N52. This is especially true if your magnet shape is very thin.
What Is the Difference Between N42 And N52 Magnets (Is N52 Strong Than N42)?
As the highest grade of neodymium magnet, N52 magnet is stronger and expensive than N42 magnet. But N42 grade offers a high performance at an economical price. Grades above N42 tend to be more expensive and the rise in price can be disproportionate to the increase in performance. An example is N52 grade which is 20% more powerful than N42 grade and yet can be twice the price.
N42 vs N52 Magnet – The specific magnetic properties differ as follows:
Grade | Remanence | Coercive Force | Intrinsic Coercive Force | Max. Energy | Max Working Temp. |
abbr | Br | HcB | HcJ | (BH) max | Tw. |
Unit | mT (KGs) | KA/m (KOe) | KA/m (KOe) | KJ/m3 (MGOe) | °C |
N42 | 1280-1320 (12.8-13.2) | ≧923 (≧11.6) | ≧955 (≧12) | 318-342 (40-43) | ≤80 |
N52 | 1430-1480 (14.3-14.8) | ≧876 (≧11.0) | ≧876 (≧11) | 394-414 (49.5-52) | ≤60 |
How Much Weight Can a N42 Magnet Hold (How Strong Is an N42 Magnet)?
This depends on the N42 magnet size, the plating and how it is used. The magnet with Ni-Cu-Ni coating will have a much higher pull force than a magnet with plastic coating.
For the pull force of different sizes, we can refer to the theoretical data from The Original K&J Magnet Calculator.

What Are the Best Uses for N42 Neodymium Magnets?
Neodymium magnet N42 is an ideal DIY Parts & Options. It can be used as closure, mount, connector, holder and stand etc. helping you for the development of new inventions and making your life easier. Therefore, you can find permanent magnets on many novel products in Kickstarter.
High temperature neodymium magnets are usually used on industrial devices, such as separators and motors with temperature requirements.
N42SH & N42UH Heat Resistant Magnets
As known, neodymium magnets (N42) demonstrate operational stability up to 80 ◦C. This temperature can be higher for other N42 series (N42M, N42H, N42SH & N42UH) rare-earth magnets. For example, the temperature stability of N42SH reaches 150 ℃, N42UH reaches 180℃. Therefore, grades N42SH & N42UH are usually used for high temperature applications, such as brushless electric motors.
